Academic Support Services Offered:
A circulating teaching collection of approximately 120,000 35 mm slides and a collection of 500 video/cd/dvd (200 professionally made and 300 produced in-house).
The still images are available only to faculty for classroom use but the videos can be checked out by students in addition to classroom use.
Image Request Policy:
Requests for new images, currently mostly slides and videos, are taken throughout the semester. Primary consideration will be given to image requests for class instruction. Requests for student use for specific courses will be referred to the William R. Jenkins Architecture & Art Library.
Image Circulation Policy:
Slides may be assembled at any time in the College’s VR slide sorting room. Slides are checked out the day of the class lecture and returned immediately after.
Videos for use in a class may be check out for a week. All other video checkouts are overnight only.
Collection Development Initatives:
In addition to the procedures in place for collection improvement and development, a number of digital media initiatives are under consideration for possible implementation.
One is the acquisition of an initial digital archive of 16,000 architecture images already catalogued in the database software currently in use in Architecture Visual Resources. This archive will also provide 1,000 new digital images on an annual basis. Unique images from the current slide collection could be digitized and added to the collection as needed.
Another digital media initiative under considerations by the UH Libraries is licensing an online image subscription service which would provide access to almost 500,000 digital images in humanities and fine arts.
Staffing:
The visual resource teaching collections are administered by one fulltime curator, one part time assistant curator, and two work student employees. The role of the Curator and Collection Staff is to improve and preserve the teaching collection of images and assist in integrating the images into the architectural curriculum.
AUDIOVISUAL EQUIPMENT is available from the Computer Laboratory, Room 301. A 24-hour advance reservation is required.
COPYPHOTOGRAPHY STAND is available for use in the William R. Jenkins Architecture & Art Library. No camera is provided.
